Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea activity prolongs monsoon into September
The Bay of Bengal is super active right now, with back-to-back low-pressure systems thanks to warmer waters.
These weather patterns are keeping the monsoon alive into early September and have already brought heavy rain to several Indian states.
At the same time, the Arabian Sea's warm waters are fueling more rain along India's west coast.
India faces 14% rainfall deficit
All this rain has caused major downpours from Mangaluru to Thiruvananthapuram: Onam celebrations in Kerala even got dampening Onam festivities.
Still, East and Northeast India are 27% below normal rainfall, and the South Peninsula is 23% short as of Sunday.
Even with recent showers in Odisha, West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Northeast India, the country overall faces a 14% rainfall deficit.
Weather forecasts say rains may shift west soon, so September could be crucial for catching up before monsoon season ends.
