Bengaluru: Minor allegedly assaulted by security guard in school premises

Safety of students in schools has been called into question with one after another instance of crime inside premises. After the alleged sexual assault and murder of a seven-year-old in a Gurugram school and the alleged rape of a five-year-old in a Delhi school, reports have now emerged that a minor was molested in a Bengaluru school by a security guard.

    What happened?

The reported incident happened in a private school in Peenya's Dasarahalli. The LKG student has alleged she was assaulted in one of the toilets by the guard, who has been identified as Obalesh. Police have checked the CCTV footage and are now awaiting a medical report of the victim who is undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, Obalesh has been detained under the POCSO Act.

Can we ensure security of children in schools?

ADGP Praveen Sood says police verification of employees won't be enough to prevent such crimes since child abuse is often committed by first-time offenders. "At best, schools should avoid having men on their staff at least at the primary level, which has very young children who are dependent on adults," he said. Despite rules, there's no authority to verify proper implementation.
