Bodoland council backs ST status for 6 Assam communities
India
The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) is supporting the push to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six Assam communities—Adivasis, Chutia, Koch-Rajbongshi, Matak, Moran, and Tai Ahom.
But BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary made it clear they're against splitting STs into sub-groups like ST (Plain), ST (Hill), or ST (Valley).
Why does it matter?
This move comes as the Assam government's proposal to expand ST status has raised concerns among existing tribes about the potential impact on their rights and privileges.
Mohilary stressed that any new additions shouldn't affect current tribal rights under BTC.
The council plans to formally share its stance with the central government soon.
