Calcutta HC stays arrest of Mahua Moitra until Aug 31
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra just got a break from the Calcutta High Court, which has protected her from arrest in a hate speech case until August 31.
The judges also set August 27 for a hearing on her challenge to the arrest warrant, so things aren't settled yet.
Lawyer disputes Mahua Moitra arrest warrant
Moitra was hit with an arrest warrant after missing court dates. Her lawyer says the lower court issued the warrant without first deciding her exemption application.
Moitra said she tried to get an exemption because of Parliament duties and a lawyers' boycott. She had less than 24 hours to travel from Delhi for one hearing, which made things tough.
The charges are about alleged derogatory comments toward the Union home minister, armed forces, and Hindu symbols that reportedly hurt religious sentiments.
