IMD warns of cold wave in north, central India
What's the story
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave warning for parts of northern and central India. The cold wave is expected to continue till November 10, with temperatures dropping significantly below seasonal averages. East Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh are among the areas likely to be affected. The IMD has already recorded temperatures dropping below 10 degrees Celsius in some areas.

Anomalies of 4 to 7 degrees Celsius below normal have been observed in parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana. The cold wave has also affected neighboring regions with night temperatures being 2-4 degrees Celsius below normal in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, parts of Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh. Both Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are experiencing recent rainfall and snowfall, with higher-altitude areas in both states receiving the season's first snow, while lower regions are seeing rain.

Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms likely in southern states
Meanwhile, southern states such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala are likely to witness heavy rainfall and thunderstorms due to the active northeast monsoon. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy showers over Tamil Nadu during November 12-13. Thunderstorms with lightning are also expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, from November 9-12, and over Kerala and Mahe from November 9-10.

The IMD has advised residents in southern coastal districts to be prepared for heavy rainfall, lightning strikes, and localized flooding. Heavy showers are likely to affect Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the weekend. Fishermen have not been warned yet, but coastal communities have been advised caution due to possible rough sea conditions. Travelers to southern tourist destinations such as Madurai, Rameswaram, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram should plan accordingly, as intermittent showers may disrupt road and air traffic.
