What's the story

A Chennai Metro train on the Blue Line came to an abrupt stop inside a tunnel between Central Metro and High Court stations on Tuesday morning. The incident left passengers with no choice but to allegedly walk along the railway track to safety. The train was en route from Wimco Nagar Depot to Chennai International Airport when it experienced a technical fault in the underground stretch.

Commuter distress

Passengers experience panic, confusion during train halt

Passengers on board the train reported a power failure, which plunged the coaches into darkness and triggered panic. Videos from inside the train showed commuters holding onto handrails and peering out of doors in confusion. After around 10 minutes of feeling trapped, an announcement was made asking passengers to evacuate toward the High Court Metro station, about 500 meters away.

Service restoration

Evacuation completed, normal operations resumed

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) later confirmed the disruption was due to a technical issue. The affected train was withdrawn from service and normal operations were restored shortly after. CMRL took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce: "Metro train services between Airport and Wimco Nagar Depot on Blue Line have resumed normal operation." They also confirmed that services on the Green Line were running as per schedule.
