Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin is a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) politician and the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He is the son of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. Stalin did his BA in History from Presidency College, Chennai. He became a member of DMK’s General Committee in 1973. In 1976, during the Emergency (1975-77), Stalin joined the long list of political detainees in prison. In the 1980s, he formed the DMK’s youth wing and became its secretary, serving in the position till 2017. Stalin became an MLA in Tamil Nadu Assembly for the first time in 1989 from Thousand Lights constituency and was re-elected in 1996. He became Chennai’s first directly elected Mayor in 1996 and was re-elected in 2001 but stepped down due to a Madras HC ruling. When DMK came to power in 2006, Stalin became a minister and served as the Deputy CM from 2009 to 2011. After his father’s death, he took over as DMK chief in 2018 and, in the 2021 Assembly polls, led the party to victory, becoming the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister himself.
