Delhi could finally breathe easier by 2040, says new study

India

A fresh study suggests Delhi can actually meet national air quality standards by 2040—if it takes big steps like those during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
Back then, pollution (PM2.5) levels dropped by up to half, showing just how much cleaner the air could get if emissions are seriously cut.

What needs to change—and why act now?

Researchers found Delhi's PM2.5 levels have hovered around 100 ug/m3 for years, way above safe limits.
To hit the Central Pollution Control Board's target of 40 ug/m3, Delhi would need to slash human-made emissions by over half, cut winter heating pollution by 75%, and stop stubble burning entirely.
The authors warn that waiting only makes things worse for both health and wallets, noting that delaying action increases the financial burden on Delhi's residents and exacerbates health risks.
