Meals for just ₹5: Delhi government launches 100 Atal Canteens
What's the story
On the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Delhi government launched the Atal Canteen scheme on Thursday, under which meals are offered for just ₹5. Reportedly, 45 such canteens have already been opened across Delhi, in areas such as RK Puram, Greater Kailash, Rajouri Garden, and Shalimar Bagh, while the remaining 55 will be inaugurated in the coming days.
Meal offerings
Atal Canteens: Menu and operational details
The Atal Canteens will serve two meals a day: lunch from 11:00am to 4:00pm and dinner from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Each of them will offer up to 1,000 meals every day. For just ₹5, these canteens will serve a thali (meal) that includes dal (legumes), rice, chapati (whole-wheat flatbread), a seasonal vegetable, and a pickle.
Modern operations
Digital token system, safety measures at canteens
The Delhi government has introduced a digital token system instead of physical coupons for the distribution of meals at the Atal Canteens. Also, CCTV cameras will monitor all the canteens in real time via the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) digital platform. The staff members will also undergo medical check-ups and obtain fire safety certifications, ensuring a safe dining environment for customers.
Inspiration
Canteens inspired by similar schemes in other states
The Atal Canteen scheme takes inspiration from Tamil Nadu's Amma Canteens and similar initiatives in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. These projects have been successful in providing affordable food to those in need for years. Notably, in its 2025-26 budget, the Delhi government allocated ₹100 crore for setting up Atal Canteens.
