Delhi protest against caste-based reservation sees more than 20 detained
A protest in Delhi against caste-based reservation turned messy on Sunday, ending with more than 20 people detained by police.
The event, under the banner of the popular Reservation Hatao Andolan page (with around 5.6 million followers), took place at Connaught Place.
Protesters were pushing for reservations to be based on economic status instead of caste and called for a rethink of current policies.
Protesters demand economic reservations, police disperse
Protesters showed up with placards and slogans, saying that support should go to all economically disadvantaged people, not just certain groups.
They asked for changes like a "creamy-layer" rule and updates to reservation systems for SCs, STs, and OBCs.
Police had already banned large gatherings in the area and ended up dispersing the crowd because there was no official permission for the protest.
