Delhi to send hardened criminals to outstation jails, Rekha Gupta
The Delhi government is shaking things up by sending "hardened and notorious" criminals to jails outside the city.
Announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the move comes after officials found that even behind bars, many gang members were still running extortion rackets and coordinating crimes.
In May 2026 alone, a Chief Minister's Office (CMO) statement said the government identified 188 members of 26 gangs and made 107 arrests, but jail wasn't stopping their operations.
Gupta invokes Transfer of Prisoners Act
Gupta explained that shifting these inmates should break their control and disrupt ongoing criminal activities.
The plan also aims to boost prison security and keep trials safer.
To make this happen, Delhi will use the Transfer of Prisoners (Punjab Amendment) Act, 2025, which lets high-risk undertrials be moved with approval from both states or the home ministry.
It's all about making it harder for gangs to call the shots from inside jail walls.
