Delhi's air: Most pollution isn't even local

India

Surprising but true—about 65% of Delhi's PM2.5 air pollution comes from outside the city, including neighboring towns and other external sources.
Jhajjar in Haryana tops the list, sending over 16% of the bad air Delhi's way—more than what all of Delhi's cars and busses produce.

NCR towns and coal plants are big culprits

Other NCR towns like Rohtak, Bhiwani, and Sonipat add to the mess, while two coal power plants in Jhajjar make things worse.
Delhi's own industries chip in about 8%.
The numbers come from a DSS study based on a 2021 emissions inventory, which experts say still offers valuable insights.

Pollution is rising—and so is government action

Jhajjar's share is set to climb even higher this week.
Meanwhile, officials are stepping up efforts against pollution hotspots—think road dust, waste burning, and old vehicles—with Union Minister Bhupender Yadav calling for stricter action after a key NCR meeting.
