ED seizes Congress office and ex-Minister's assets in Chhattisgarh
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has frozen a Congress party office in Sukma and seized assets worth ₹6.15 crore from MLA Kawasi Lakhma and his son. This move is part of a probe into a massive liquor scam, where over ₹2,100 crore was allegedly made through illegal sales, costing the state big money. The ED's action comes after raids in December 2024 and is meant to stop these assets from being moved or sold during the investigation.
Supreme Court pushes back on ED's approach
Kawasi Lakhma, a six-time MLA and former excise minister, was arrested for his alleged role in this scam. According to the ED, officials and private players took bribes from liquor makers to rig market shares and sold country liquor off-the-books. However, the Supreme Court has pushed back on the ED's approach, pointing out that making claims without enough proof seems to be becoming a trend in such cases.
