Fake doctor exposed in Assam after 25 years of fraud

India

Turns out, Sartaj Uddin spent 25 years working as a doctor in Bongaigaon, Assam—without ever having a real medical degree or registration.
From 2001 to 2025, he treated thousands of people and even built a multi-storey building with the money he earned from patients.
Now, the Assam Council of Medical Registration has received a complaint, and police are on his trail for medical fraud.
Uddin is currently missing.

What this means and what's being done

Uddin's case shines a light on the bigger issue of fake doctors in India.
In just this year, police have cracked down on several unlicensed practitioners—including one who performed over 50 C-sections with fake credentials in Cachar district and another who practiced for decades in Pune.
Authorities are also busting rackets selling fake medical degrees for around ₹70,000.
All this shows why tighter checks are needed to keep patients safe from scams like these.
