Goa nightclub fire leaves 25 dead, sparks safety crackdown
A tragic fire broke out at Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in North Goa early Sunday, reportedly after a gas cylinder exploded during a packed "Bollywood Banger Night."
Out of around 100 people present, 25 lost their lives—mostly staff and five tourists, most of whom were trapped in the basement kitchen with narrow exits.
Six others were injured.
Most victims died from smoke; government steps in
The fire spread fast, causing most deaths from smoke inhalation. This has put a spotlight on poor safety standards at such venues.
Goa's Chief Minister has ordered a magisterial inquiry and promised answers within a week.
The club's owner and manager face arrest, while the government will audit other venues for fire safety.
Families of the deceased will get ₹5 lakh compensation; injured survivors will receive ₹50,000.
