Gujarat HC begins contempt proceedings against senior advocate
The Gujarat High Court has started contempt proceedings against a senior advocate who was seen sipping from a beer mug and using his phone during an online court session on June 26.
The incident, which happened before Justice Sandeep Bhatt, was called "outrageous and glaring" by the judges.
The lawyer's actions broke strict court rules for virtual hearings and quickly spread across social media, putting the court in an awkward spotlight.
Judges say they might reconsider lawyer's senior counsel status
The court has ordered a formal contempt case against the lawyer and preserved video evidence of what happened.
For now, he's barred from appearing virtually before this bench.
The judges also hinted they might reconsider his Senior Counsel status, saying such behavior goes against what's expected from someone in that position and hurts the dignity of the institution.
