Jawaharlal Nehru: News
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of independent India and a significant figure in India’s freedom struggle. Born in Allahabad, Nehru was home-schooled until he went abroad and studied law. On his return to India in 1912, Nehru took a keen interest in politics and followed his father, Motilal Nehru, a close aide of Mahatma Gandhi, into the chambers of the Indian National Congress (INC). Nehru was made the President of the party in 1929, and he laid the foundation of India’s goal towards complete freedom in a historic session in Lahore. Nehru, along with Gandhi, was also instrumental in the events leading up to the partition of 1947. It was during his many detentions in jail that Nehru explored his initial interest in socialism, an ideology that became one of the key pillars of his 17-year term as the first Indian Prime Minister. During his tenure, Nehru tried to resolve the Kashmir issue and partially succeeded by initiating the creation of the Line Of Control (LoC), which continues to separate the Indian and Pakistani sides. Post his death in 1964, Nehru was succeeded by Lal Bahadur Shastri as the Prime Minister.
