Haridwar mayor considers ban on meat sales before Ardh Kumbh
India
Haridwar is thinking about banning meat sales in the city ahead of the big Ardh Kumbh Mela in early 2027.
Mayor Kiran Jaisal says it's mainly about keeping things clean, especially since there's no slaughterhouse in town.
If passed, meat shops would have to move to new spots on the outskirts.
Haridwar ban could risk 10,000 jobs
If the ban goes through, restaurant sales may also be affected, but home purchases within the municipal area could be restricted.
This might put over 100 businesses and around 10,000 jobs at risk.
Some local leaders worry about how fair this is: councilors like Arshad Khwaja say it could hurt restaurants and livelihoods, while officials stress that public feedback and legal checks are still needed before anything is final.
