Haryana gets interim police chief after controversy

India

Haryana just named O P Singh as its interim Director General of Police (DGP), stepping in while Shatrujeet Kapur takes a two-month leave.
This shake-up follows the tragic alleged suicide of Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, who accused Kapur and others of caste discrimination and harassment in a note before his death.
The case sparked protests and calls for Kapur's removal.

Why does this matter?

The government has removed Rohtak's top cop following the incident, and there were demands to include him in the FIR for abetment of suicide.
A special team is now investigating the incident.
Meanwhile, the Union Public Service Commission blocked Haryana's attempt to appoint a permanent DGP, saying there isn't an official vacancy since Kapur is still technically on duty.

So, who is O P Singh?

Singh is a senior IPS officer from the 1992 batch who took over DGP duties in October.
He'll retire at the end of December, so this appointment is temporary while things get sorted out.

What happens to Kapur?

Kapur remains with Haryana Police as chairman of the Housing Corporation until his retirement.
The whole situation highlights how complex leadership changes can get when controversy hits high-profile roles like these.
