IMD reports Kerala monsoon 23% deficit, 1,278.7mm since June
Kerala's monsoon has been way below par this year, with the IMD reporting a 23% rainfall deficit as of August 24.
Since June, the state got just 1,278.7mm of rain, far less than its usual average of 1,671.4mm.
This puts Kerala firmly in the "deficient" zone for monsoon rains.
Kerala's Wayanad 51% deficit Idukki 45%
Some districts are feeling the pinch more than others.
Wayanad tops the list with a massive 51% shortfall, and Idukki isn't far behind at 45%.
Kollam, Thrissur, and Palakkad saw deficits between 26% and 30%, while Alappuzha and Ernakulam missed their averages by about one-quarter.
Lakshadweep 27% deficit, Mahe 15% normal
Lakshadweep also faced a 27% drop in rainfall, while Mahe had a smaller deficit at 15% but still stayed within normal limits.
Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram managed to keep things close to average this season.
