India-Bhutan railway project worth ₹4,033cr kicks off

India

India and Bhutan are teaming up for their very first railway connection, linking Banarhat (West Bengal) to Samtse and Kokrajhar (Assam) to Gelephu in Bhutan.
Announced at the end of September 2024, these two rail lines will together cover 89km and cost around ₹4,033 crore.
The Kokrajhar-Gelephu line is scheduled for completion in four years, and the Banarhat-Samtse line in three years.

Why it matters

This project isn't just about trains—it's about making trade smoother between India and Bhutan, helping local economies on both sides.
The new routes also make it easier to move goods through the narrow "Chicken's Neck" region, which is crucial for India's security.
Plus, with China pushing its own railways nearby as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, this move shows India is serious about staying connected with its neighbors and keeping the region secure.
