What's the story

Ahead of the 2026 season, Indian Premier League (IPL) team captains have been cautioned about the need for full control over catches before celebrating. As per Cricbuzz, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) emphasized that a fielder must have complete control over both the ball and their body before a catch is considered complete. This was reiterated in Clause 33.3 of the IPL's playing conditions document.

Rule enforcement

Captains shown clips of controversial catches

During a recent BCCI meeting, captains were shown video clips of controversial catches, some from the recent T20 World Cup. The clips highlighted instances where the fielder's body wasn't completely under control, making the catch invalid. The officials stressed that this rule would be strictly enforced in the upcoming season. Javagal Srinath and Nitin Menon led this discussion during the 90-minute meeting with team captains and managers.

Rule continuation

Impact Player rule to remain in effect

The BCCI also confirmed that the controversial Impact Player rule will remain in effect for at least one more season. Captains and managers present at the meeting were informed. Axar Patel, an all-rounder, had previously expressed his discontent with the rule, saying it affects his position in teams as they now prefer specialist batsmen or bowlers over all-rounders.
