India eyes renegotiation of Ganga water treaty with Bangladesh

India is getting ready to renegotiate its 30-year-old Ganges Water Sharing Treaty with Bangladesh, which expires in 2026.
The current deal splits the river's dry-season flow at West Bengal's Farakka Barrage, allocating 35,000 cusecs alternatively to both countries every 10 days.

TL;DR

India seeks more Ganga water

India now wants more water—about 30,000 to 35,000 extra cusecs—to help with farming, energy, and port needs.
West Bengal supports this push, saying the old agreement didn't fully consider local concerns.
But any changes need Bangladesh's approval too.
With both countries relying on the Ganges for agriculture and power—and as regional water politics heat up—how this plays out could shape daily life for millions on both sides of the border.
