India issues 1st in-space guidelines for planned spacecraft re-entry
India just dropped its first-ever guidelines for the planned re-entry of spacecraft and satellites safely back to earth.
Released by IN-SPACe, these rules are all about keeping space safer and less crowded and making sure India's actions match up with global standards.
IN-SPACe approval mandates casualty-risk under 1-in-10,000
Now, any Indian entity undertaking a planned re-entry, whether within or outside Indian territory, needs official approval from IN-SPACe.
Operators must prove their plans keep casualty risks super low (less than 1 in 10,000), run detailed hazard checks, and give safety notices well ahead of time.
If anything goes wrong or causes damage, operators remain liable for third-party damage and claims.
Guidelines align India with global standards
With these guidelines, India is showing it is serious about managing space debris and protecting our orbital environment.
