Indian Army orders ₹5,000cr worth of homegrown drones after tough trials

India

The Indian Army is placing a massive ₹5,000 crore order for Indian-made drones.
This move follows some pretty intense trials—think spoofing and jamming tests inspired by Operation Sindoor—to make sure the tech can handle real-world threats.
Emergency powers helped fast-track the whole process.

How did they pick the drones?

Selection was strict: first, all Chinese parts were ruled out.
Next came electronic warfare tests in a special jamming zone, starting right from launch.
Finally, the drones had to prove they could perform at high altitudes across different terrains.

Who's building these drones—and why does it matter?

Big contracts went to Munitions India Limited for loitering munitions and to NewSpace Research & Technologies and SMPP Pvt Ltd for surveillance and kamikaze drones.
ideaForge and JSW are also in line for more deals soon.
For India's defense scene, this isn't just about new gadgets—it's about modernizing the Army, supporting local industry, and making sure we're ready for whatever comes next.
