Indian police find 414 LPG cylinders in graveyard amid shortages
Indian police just uncovered 414 cooking gas cylinders hidden in a graveyard, part of a bigger crackdown on illegal LPG sales.
This comes as India faces LPG supply shortages, thanks to disrupted shipping routes caused by tensions in the Middle East involving Iran.
Since India relies on the Middle East for most of its LPG, these shortages are hitting hard.
Sujata Sharma: raids, detentions, alternatives
According to Sujata Sharma from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, around 2,600 raids have happened across India, seizing around 700 cylinders so far.
In Hyderabad alone, 10 people were detained and a distributor was suspended after selling gas at nearly three times the normal price.
Despite all this chaos, domestic LPG prices have stayed stable.
The government is also pushing alternatives like kerosene and biogas while working to expand piped natural gas connections to help ease demand.
