Indian Railways unveils its 1st hydrogen train

India

Indian Railways just built its first-ever hydrogen-powered train, marking a big move toward greener travel.
This homegrown train features two powerful Driving Power Cars and eight coaches, all designed to help cut down on rail emissions as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat push.

How does this green train work?

Instead of diesel, it runs on hydrogen fuel cells—basically, it mixes hydrogen (made at a plant in Jind) with oxygen to create electricity.
The only thing coming out of its exhaust is water vapor, making it much cleaner than traditional trains.

Why does it matter—and what's next?

This pilot project is a step toward India's 2030 net-zero goals and could bring eco-friendly trains to remote or tough-to-electrify areas.
But for now, things like the high cost of green hydrogen and setting up refueling stations are still big challenges.
