India's peak electricity demand to hit 388GW by FY2031-32
India's electricity needs are rising fast: peak power demand is expected to hit 388 gigawatts (GW) in FY 2031-32, up from a record 250 GW in 2024-25.
Energy use overall is also projected to jump, reaching about 2,703 billion units by then as the country's cities and industries keep growing.
Indian government expands generation and transmission
To make sure there's enough power for everyone, the government is boosting generation capacity with new thermal, hydro, and nuclear projects.
There is also a big push for renewables: solar and wind projects commissioned by June 30, 2025 get a break on transmission charges, tapering off by 25% annually until June 2028.
A nationwide plan for better transmission lines aims to support all these upgrades, so hopefully, blackouts will be less of a worry as India powers up for the future.
