IndiGo cancels 1,000+ flights after sudden pilot shortage

India

IndiGo just had to cancel over 1,000 flights on Friday after a surprise pilot shortage hit, thanks to new duty-time rules.
The trouble started Tuesday, but CEO Pieter Elbers says things should get better soon—with cancelations dropping below 1,000 by Saturday and normal schedules expected between December 10-15.
To help out, the government has temporarily eased those strict rules.

What this means for travelers

With IndiGo running about 2,300 flights a day, the disruption has thrown off lots of travel plans. The airline is working to recover as quickly as possible now that the rules are relaxed.
Delhi Airport says things are slowly stabilizing but suggests checking your flight status before heading out.
This whole episode shows just how much airlines rely on their pilots—and how quickly things can change when regulations shift.
