Jet fuel prices more than doubled in India, fares rising
Planning an overseas trip this summer? Brace yourself: international flight tickets are about to get pricier.
On April 1, 2026, Indian oil companies more than doubled jet fuel prices, thanks to the ongoing West Asia conflict that's sent crude oil costs over $115 a barrel.
Airlines are feeling the pinch and passing some of those costs on to travelers.
International flights hit by fuel hikes
Unlike domestic routes (which have some government price controls), international flights get hit directly by these fuel hikes.
Major airlines like IndiGo and Air India already added extra fuel surcharges in March.
With jet fuel making up around 35% to 40% of airline expenses (and new rules limiting what airlines can charge for seat selection), it's getting tougher for them to keep fares low.
The government has asked airlines not to go overboard with price hikes, but higher ticket prices seem pretty much unavoidable right now.
