J&K Police advisory for Amarnath Yatra pilgrims

The annual Amarnath Yatra kicks off July 3, and this year, safety is front and center.
After a recent security scare in Udhampur, J&K Police are asking pilgrims not to travel alone—stick with escorted groups for your own protection.

TL;DR

Two routes to shrine, lodgement centers for 6,500 people

Pilgrims can choose between two routes: a scenic but long 48-km trek from Pahalgam or a steeper, shorter 14-km climb from Baltal.
To make things smoother, there are 26 lodgement centers in Udhampur that can host up to 6,500 people.
Plus, emergency teams have been running drills so everyone knows what to do if something goes wrong.

Police, Army working together to ensure safety

Multiple agencies—including police and the Army—are working together to keep things safe.
There's even a high-tech control center tracking vehicles and pilgrims in real time.

Thousands expected to join despite worries about safety

The first group leaves Jammu on July 2, and despite worries about safety, thousands are expected to join.
All these extra precautions mean you can focus more on the experience—and less on concerns—if you're planning to go or just following along.
