Karnataka suspends food licenses for Amazon, Swiggy Instamart, BigBasket
Heads up: Karnataka has just suspended the food licenses of Amazon, Swiggy Instamart, and BigBasket after finding toxic Datura fruits and seeds listed as food products on their platforms.
The companies have been told to pull all Datura-related items immediately because this plant is seriously dangerous if consumed.
Platforms sold Datura with FSSAI numbers
Food safety checks revealed these platforms were selling Datura with FSSAI registration numbers, which definitely isn't okay.
At a hearing today (August 24), Amazon didn't reply to the notice, Swiggy Instamart asked for more time to fix things, and BigBasket stopped sales but changed labels to say "Not for human consumption."
Regulators felt these responses weren't enough and warned there could be more penalties if rules aren't followed.
