Kerala greenlights ₹1,900cr Sabari rail project restart
Kerala has greenlit ₹1,900 crore to restart the long-paused Sabari Rail project, after the Centre agreed to lift a previous freeze.
The funding comes via the state's infrastructure board (KIIFB), aiming to get this crucial rail line back on track.
Total cost and land needed
This project plans a 110-111km railway from Angamaly to Erumeli, with 14 stations and a major 13km tunnel.
It's expected to cost between about ₹3,421 crore and about ₹3,800 crore in total and needs between 274 and 303.58 hectares of land—so it's a big one for Kerala.
Benefits of the rail link
Work on the first stretch (Angamaly-Kalady) is already 90% done.
Once finished, this rail link will make travel easier for Sabarimala pilgrims and boost access for people in hilly districts like Ernakulam and Idukki—plus help local economies connect better with markets.
