Kochi tank burst floods streets, damages homes, vehicles
Early Monday, a Kerala Water Authority tank built more than 50 years ago in Thammanam, Kochi, suddenly collapsed and sent about 1.38 crore liters of water flooding into the streets.
Nearly 30% of Kochi and nearby areas lost their water supply.
The flood also damaged around 15 homes, vehicles, and compound walls. No injuries were reported.
Health center ruined
The Thammanam Primary Family Health Centre got flooded too, ruining medicines and equipment.
Roads like Kulathumgal Bava Road were left battered along with several vehicles.
District Collector Priyanka G called it a structural failure and has ordered a full damage check.
Water supply partially restored
Partial water supply is back after pumping resumed from the unaffected chamber of the same tank on Monday.
Experts are investigating the collapse—early signs point to foundation sinking rather than bad design.
The Water Resources Minister has pushed for emergency repairs and asked KWA to boost supply from other stations until things are back on track.
Experts are investigating the collapse
This incident isn't just about broken pipes—it's a wake-up call about how fragile our city infrastructure can be, especially when so many people depend on it every day.
