Kolkata: 2 crocodiles escape zoo during heaviest rainfall in 40y

India

During Kolkata's heaviest rainfall in nearly 40 years, two crocodiles at Alipore Zoo managed to escape their enclosure.
Thankfully, zoo staff acted fast and safely recaptured them within an hour.
The other 16 crocs stayed put.

Crocodiles were among the many challenges for the zoo

The epic downpour didn't just affect the zoo—flooding hit animal enclosures and much of the city. Zoo teams worked quickly to pump out water to keep animals safe.
Across Kolkata, flooding disrupted transport, closed schools early for Durga Puja break, and sadly led to at least 10 deaths, mostly from electrocution.
The zoo's quick response helped prevent any bigger safety scares during a tough time for the city.
