Kolkata: Massive fire breaks out at Medical College, 250-patients evacuated

What's the story

On Wednesday morning, a massive fire broke out at Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata due to which at least 250 students were evacuated. The cause of the fire and damage is yet to be ascertained. Reportedly, 10 fire engines were rushed to the spot to douse the fire. At the time of press, no casualties were reported. Here's more about this tragedy.

What happened

As smoke engulfed building, patients tried jumping out

Early reports suggested the fire started at 7:58 AM at a pharmacy. As smoke engulfed, few patients reportedly tried to jump out of the building. Amateur photos from the college showed patients being taken out of the building with their saline drops. Some were lying on the floor. Also known as Calcutta Medical College, the establishment is one of the oldest in the city.

Last month, a massive fire in congested area at Bagree market in Burrabazar area was brought to control after two days. At least 1,000 business establishments were gutted after the fire which caused huge loss to traders ahead of Durga Puja. The state government had asked police to find the guilty and initiate strict action against them.
