Ladakh's LAB and KDA announce June 23 shutdown over safeguards
Ladakh's top local groups, the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), have announced a region-wide shutdown on June 23.
They are upset because the central government left out key agreements from a recent meeting about Ladakh's political future, like constitutional safeguards discussed/proposed at the meeting and more autonomy for the region.
Chering Dorjay warns of Ladakh unrest
LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjay says these omissions have only deepened people's distrust toward the central government, especially since an agreement to let elected leaders oversee Ladakh's bureaucracy was ignored.
He warns that if demands keep getting sidelined, protests could spread beyond Leh and calls for statehood or special protections might return.
Transport will keep running to support tourists during the shutdown.
