Lalit Modi's petition highlights ED investigation
India
Former IPL boss Lalit Modi has gone to the Supreme Court, asking them to make BCCI pay a ₹10 crore penalty.
This all goes back to the 2009 IPL season in South Africa, when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) found that BCCI sent huge sums abroad without proper RBI approval—basically breaking financial rules.
What exactly happened in 2009 IPL season?
The ED discovered BCCI transferred ₹243 crore to Cricket South Africa without clearance from India's central bank, violating FEMA rules.
There were also suspicious payments before contracts were signed and long after the tournament ended, plus ₹44 crore linked to a mysterious 'proxy' account.
All this led to penalties for BCCI and now Modi wants them held accountable for it.
