Maharashtra village with 1,500 people logs 27,000+ births—fraud exposed

India

A routine check in Shendurusani village, Yavatmal, revealed something wild: over 27,000 birth certificates and just seven deaths for a place with only 1,500 residents.
Officials quickly realized this was no mistake—an inquiry found all those births were registered from outside the village using a CRS login traced to Mumbai.
It's suspected to be part of a bigger cyber fraud scheme.

What's happening now?

Police have filed a case and are investigating if the Civil Registration System was hacked for identity fraud or misuse of government schemes.
A BJP leader claimed most fake entries were linked to West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh residents and called for cancelations.
