Meghalaya tourism suffers 80% to 90% cancelations after Shillong unrest
Meghalaya's tourism scene has taken a big hit after unrest broke out at a student rally in Shillong on August 19.
With safety worries rising, hotels and homestays in spots like Shillong and Cherrapunjee have seen 80% to 90% of bookings canceled, right before the Puja holidays and Christmas rush, which are usually peak times for visitors.
Tourism groups urge Assam Meghalaya security
Tourists are backing out because of fears over blockades and reports of several vehicles being vandalized in Shillong and protests affecting vehicular movement along parts of the Assam-Meghalaya route.
E.B. Blah, who heads Meghalaya's tour operators group, said things could get even worse if tensions keep up.
Tourism groups are urging the government to step in quickly to restore security and smooth travel between Assam and Meghalaya, so the state doesn't lose its reputation as a safe holiday spot during this crucial season.
