Population control- 146 lacking districts to have 'Mission Parivar Vikas'

Upping its fight against population explosion, the government has announced 'Mission Parivar Vikas' in 146 districts where the Total Fertility Rate (number of children born per woman) is more than three.
It is aimed at bringing population control methods to the common man's reach and spread awareness about related issues.
The districts are located in Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

India's TFR has come down significantly, from 2.6 in 2008 to 2.3 now (it is aiming a replacement level of 2.1). However, the decline is uneven across different regions.
These 146 districts add up to 28% of the population.
Twenty-four states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab and West Bengal as well as the southern states, have already achieved the replacement level.

The program also aims to control maternal and infant mortality, which are related to high TFR. These districts account for 25-30% of maternal deaths and 50% of infant deaths.
The government will distribute family planning kits to newlyweds and award compensation to the needy.
"Saarthi-Awareness on Wheels", special buses, will make rounds to disseminate information. Regional actors will also be roped in for the purpose.
