Modi government's internship scheme struggles to attract candidates
The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS), launched in October 2024, set out to offer one crore internships with top companies over five years.
But so far, it hasn't caught on—out of more than 1.27 lakh spots in the first round, only about 8,700 students actually joined.
The second round didn't fare much better, with just six percent of positions filled.
Why should you care?
For young people looking for work experience, this was supposed to be a big opportunity—but most are skipping it.
The government says location issues, long internship periods, and many students choosing further studies are reasons for the low turnout.
They're now rethinking the plan based on feedback and may make major changes before rolling it out nationwide.
If you're hoping for better internships soon, keep an eye on what happens next!
