Mumbai-Pune Expressway: Gas tanker overturns, causes hours-long traffic jam
India
A gas tanker flipped over near the Adoshi Tunnel on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway Tuesday evening, bringing traffic to a standstill for hours.
The accident happened as the tanker was taking a curve in Khandala Ghat, and things escalated quickly when it started leaking highly flammable propylene gas.
Police shut down the highway
To keep everyone safe, police immediately shut down the Mumbai-bound side of the expressway and diverted vehicles onto the other lane.
This led to a gridlock in both directions that lasted several hours, leaving hundreds, and by some accounts thousands, stuck on the highway.
For anyone traveling between Mumbai and Pune, this was an unexpected nightmare commute.
