Mumbai-Pune Expressway jam: 20-22km long traffic snarl clears
A propylene gas tanker overturned near the Adoshi tunnel on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway Tuesday evening (Feb 3, 2026), causing a gas leak and bringing traffic to a grinding halt for more than 24 hours.
The accident sparked a jam stretching up to 20-22km on the expressway, leaving hundreds of vehicles stuck while emergency teams worked to contain the flammable gas.
No food or water for hours
People in cars, trucks, and MSRTC busses were stranded for hours with no food or water—and nowhere to go.
One bus conductor shared that their bus hadn't moved for over six hours.
On social media, people compared the scene to a giant "parking lot."
Authorities clear traffic after midnight
To ease the chaos, police diverted some traffic onto alternate routes and reopened one lane after midnight when the situation was brought under partial control.
Authorities advised commuters to avoid the expressway and use the old Mumbai-Pune Highway, with temporary diversions and intermittent use of the opposite carriageway for a short stretch.
Lessons from the mess
This whole incident showed just how much better emergency response and infrastructure are needed on such busy highways.
With thousands stranded and an overturned tanker carrying propylene gas, it's clear there's work to do so something like this doesn't happen again.
