Mumbai's ambitious underground tunnel project to ease traffic woes

India

Mumbai is gearing up for a major upgrade: a 70km underground tunnel system designed to give the city's traffic some breathing room.
The MMRDA's three-phase plan will move cars, commuters, and even freight below ground—connecting key spots like Worli, BKC, the airport, and more.

What will the tunnel system look like?

First up is a 16km tunnel linking the coastal road at Worli with BKC and the international airport (plus future bullet train access).
Next comes a 10km stretch tying together both express highways with direct airport routes.
The final phase? A massive 44km north-south corridor to make moving around—and moving goods—a whole lot easier.

With less traffic on roads, commuters can expect faster travel

By shifting through-traffic underground and syncing up with other tunnels already in progress (like Orange Gate-Marine Drive and Thane-Borivali), Mumbai could see less gridlock on main roads and faster commutes across town.
