Anurag Kashyap: News
Born on September 10, 1987, Indian film director, writer, editor, producer, and actor Anurag Kashyap has several accolades and awards under his belt. Born in Gorakhpur, he graduated from Hans Raj College in New Delhi. After arriving in Mumbai in 1993, Kashyap had to struggle to make ends meet. In the initial days of his career, Kashyap worked with film director Sriram Raghavan, in a short TV series titled, ‘Auto Narayan’ based on the life of gangster Gowri Shankar, which later got scrapped. He got his breakthrough in 1998 with Ram Gopal Verma’s movie ‘Satya’ as a screenwriter. The movie was critically and commercially lauded, and is considered to be amongst the finest movies of the Indian film industry. Kashyap made his directorial debut with ‘Paanch,' which was based on the 1976 Joshi-Abhyankar serial murder case. The movie ran into trouble with the Central Board of Film Certification over violence, drug abuse and language, depicted in the movie. It was cleared by CBFC in 2003, but it never got a theatrical release due to some problems faced by the producer. Kashyap’s first universally acclaimed movie is ‘Black Friday’ (2004), which was based on Hussain Zaidi’s novel about the 1993 Bombay bombings. As of 2021, Kashyap has directed over 15 movies some of which were blockbuster hits, including ‘Dev.D’ (2009), ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ (2012), and ‘Manmarziyaan’ (2018). He has also directed the Netflix series, ‘Sacred Games.’ He was married to actor Kalki Koechlin (2009-2015). In 2021, the Income Tax Department said that it found tax discrepancies of Rs. 300 crore with his production firm Phantom Films. At least 28 locations in Mumbai and Pune were raided in connection with the case, on March 3, 2021.
