Nine Maoists from Chhattisgarh surrender at Gadchiroli before Center deadline
India
Nine Maoists from Chhattisgarh turned themselves in at Gadchiroli police headquarters, right before the Center's March 31 deadline to end left-wing extremism.
Their surrender was a big moment for local authorities, who hope it signals a shift away from violence in the region.
Nationwide total 940 Maoist cadres surrendered
Thanks to tips from those who surrendered, police recovered an AK-47 rifle and walkie-talkies from forests along the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border, striking a blow to Maoist operations.
The Maharashtra government is also offering up to ₹5.5 lakh and rehab packages for those who give up arms.
This brings the nationwide total of surrendered Maoist cadres to 940 since Oct. 15 last year, showing their influence is on the decline.
