What's the story

Delhi woke up to light rains on Sunday, bringing much-needed respite from the sweltering heat and humidity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 1mm of rainfall between 8:30pm on Saturday and 8:30am on Sunday. Light rain was observed in isolated pockets across the national capital, with mist reported in the Safdarjung area where temperatures hovered around 27°C at 8am.

Ridge area records thunderstorm, mist

The Ridge area of Delhi also witnessed a light thunderstorm with rain and mist, recording temperatures of 26°C at 7am according to IMD.

Over the past 24 hours, the city has witnessed very light to light rainfall at several places. Moderate rainfall was recorded at isolated spots along with thunderstorms and lightning activity.

Minimum temperatures across Delhi remained between 23-26°C while maximum temperatures settled between 34-35°C.

According to IMD data till 8:30am, Pusa recorded the highest cumulative rainfall of 16.5mm.

Heavy rainfall in other parts of India

In other parts of India, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura witnessed very heavy rainfall yesterday.

East and West Uttar Pradesh along with East Madhya Pradesh also received very heavy rainfall.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Assam and Meghalaya were among the regions that recorded heavy rainfall along with Himachal Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.

Future predictions

Rainfall warnings across India

The IMD has also predicted isolated heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand from August 22-28.

Fairly widespread rainfall is likely in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during this period.

Jharkhand is expected to see similar weather conditions between August 23-28, while Bihar may witness such conditions from August 24-26.
