Punjab's power subsidy mess: Over ₹10,000 crore unpaid
Punjab is in a tough spot—over ₹10,000 crore in power subsidies promised to the state's power company (PSPCL) haven't been paid.
For 2025-26, the government owed ₹14,700 crore but only delivered ₹8,700 crore.
Add in leftover dues and the total unpaid bill just keeps climbing.
Where's all this money supposed to go?
Most of these subsidies cover free electricity for farmers (₹10,413 crore), discounted home power bills (₹6,589 crore), and help for industries (₹2,384 crore).
On top of that, government departments like water supply and local bodies owe PSPCL another ₹2,582 crore.
Why does it matter?
Late payments are messing with PSPCL's summer plans and pushing up costs for everyone.
Engineers even warned the Chief Minister about possible bankruptcy if things don't change.
Still, Minister Sanjeev Arora says all dues will be cleared by the end of the fiscal—so let's see if they keep that promise.
