Amid CJP 'inspections,' 611 Rajasthan schools found operating without buildings
What's the story
The Rajasthan government told the Legislative Assembly on Friday that 611 government schools in the state were running without their own buildings. The shocking revelation came in response to a question from Leader of Opposition (LoP) Tika Ram Jully. The data also showed that among these schools, 10 are exclusively for girls. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has blamed the previous Congress-led Ashok Gehlot administration for these infrastructure shortcomings.
Schools
2,047 lack toilet facilities
According to Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) data for 2025-26 under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, 611 government schools in the state do not have buildings.
Among the 64,484 state-run schools that have their own buildings, 2,047 lack toilet facilities and 1,049 lack drinking water facilities, while approximately 8.5% of schools still lack electricity, the Indian Express reported.
Inspection incident
CJP team attacked in Bagru
The disclosure comes after a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) team was attacked while traveling to inspect a government school in Bagru near Jaipur.
Videos from the scene showed an angry crowd confronting and attacking the CJP team, hurling abuses and accusing them of being "urban naxals," "anti-nationals," and "Pakistanis."
The visit was to investigate claims that the school was operating from a cowshed, as its original building was declared unsafe last year.
Students were then moved to a temporary structure.
Infrastructure crisis
Jaipur has 38 such schools
The CJP's inspections were conducted under the organization's self-initiated volunteer campaign called "School Thik Karo," launched in August 2026.
The problem of schools without buildings is not limited to Bagru. Jaipur has 38 such schools, while Jhalawar's Aklera block leads with 23.
Other places like Khanpur and Jhalrapatan also have multiple schools lacking proper infrastructure.
Funding allocation
₹550 crore allocated for school repairs and renovation
To address the infrastructure deficit, the Rajasthan government has earmarked ₹550 crore for the repair and renovation of schools and another ₹450 crore for constructing new buildings.
It plans to spend ₹2,500 crore annually over five years on construction, repair, and maintenance of school buildings through various funding sources.
However, Leader of Opposition Jully criticized the government's efforts as inadequate in tackling the infrastructure crisis.
Preparedness questioned
Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully questions government's plan
Jully cited the same audit to question the government's preparedness to tackle the infrastructure crisis.
He said 3,768 government schools were completely dilapidated and unsafe, while 83,783 schoolrooms were also unsafe for use.
"They don't have a plan," Jully said, claiming that schools had been closed or shifted because of their poor condition affecting enrollment.
